Q: What is a Windjammer Sport (Extended version)
A: After extensive research and
development, Ryan-Performance is proud to introduce the
Windjammer Sport, a wind blocker for your Mazda Miata with no
compromises. The Windjammer Sport offers not only style, but
also effective and affordable convenience. Its passionate
design is inspired by the European Audi TT. We
started by listing all the issues at hand: wind, noise, rear
visibility, independent seat movement, limited seat recline,
aesthetics, affordability, and materials. Also, we wanted to make
installation straightforward and independent from the factory
cockpit brace.
As a result, we designed custom aluminum brackets
coated in satin black, which provides a beautiful and long
lasting finish. The stylish blocker itself is made of crystal
clear, durable cast acrylic that surpasses the strength of
glass. The Windjammer Sport makes heads turn. Our wind
blocker fits all Mazda Miata models with or without the factory
cockpit brace and allows the use of
the factory boot cover. In addition, it is fully compatible with
both factory soft- and hard-tops. We provide a 4mm hex tool with
every kit to assist in the installation and for future
adjustments. Ryan-Performance’s wind blocker uses only stainless
steel hex bolts that won't rust
over time and serve as a theft deterrent, protecting your
investment. Finally, our step-by-step instructions provide clear
and detailed graphics to help you install your Windjammer Sport
and transform your convertible
driving experience!
Cast Acrylic v.s. Extruded Acrylic
Many materials can be produced by different manufacturing
processes. Extruding, casting, and molding are common methods used to process acrylic. Consideration of the manufacturing process is important
to achieving the desired properties of the component. Acrylic, in particular,
varies in hardness between a cast and an extruded sheet. Extruded acrylic is much
lower in cost and generally best used for display-type work. For superior
machining and dimensional stability, cast acrylic should be used.
Imported Acrylic Beware
Like several consumer items on the market today, some
plastics are manufactured outside the United States. Imported acrylics, for example,
are popular because they are inexpensive. Unfortunately, sheet thickness at the
bottom of the tolerance band tends to be thinner than that of the domestic sheet
counterparts. Additionally, these acrylics may not be as stable and usually have
greater internal stress. Imported material is suitable for the display industry,
in which cost control is paramount, but for high-end and for instance high-performance
products like Windjammer Sport is best not compromise. The material will provide greater stability and better
overall machinability. We specified domestic
sources to our suppliers.
Process Considerations
On sheet acrylic the most common surface-finishing method is flame polishing.
Flame polishing uses a hot flame to flow a surface. Operator skill is critical with
this method. When done properly, flame polishing produces the clearest
finish on acrylics.
Other considerations
Acrylic is half the weight of glass with many times the impact resistance, it also
offers excellent optical characteristics, thickness tolerances, light stability,
and low internal stress levels for consistent performance. In addition to colorless
(clear acrylic), a wide range of transparent and translucent colors are available.
Custom colors can be made to order through special order and minimum quantities, but
we usually stock Windjammer Sport is clear, green edge and dark smoke.
Conclusion
Knowledge of the plastics manufacturing process can be helpful when you want the
best with no compromises. When we decided to do this we stated clear that
we would offer something not available anywhere else. Extra time and research
was invested for the parts special specifications.
